Mrs. Mallard and Her Eight Ducklings sculpture is installed.
1987
Artist: Nancy Schön. It is located in the Public Garden. Commissioned to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the founding of the Boston Public Garden and conceived by urban planner Suzanne DeMonchaux, they are based on Robert McCloskey’s 1941 children’s book Make Way for Ducklings. The sculptures become extremely popular with small children, who like to ride the ducks, and adults, who dress them up for holidays and in sports jerseys when Boston teams compete for championships. The ducklings names are Jack, Kack, Lack, Mack, Nack, Ouack, Pack and Quack. Jack is stolen then recovered three weeks later in a Boston College library cubicle in 1999. Pack is discovered stolen on the morning of April 6, 2009 and recovered at the corner of Brimmer and Mount Vernon Street on April 7, 2009.
